Interested in hosting one of the Musical Chairs Tournies?

So you are wondering what is involved to become a tournament host? This is more of a guideline that informs prospective hosts what it takes to become a TD (Tournament Director). For starters, you will learn how to do the tasks listed below.

  1. Learning how to install and use a keyboard macro. The purpose of using the macro is to make it easier to interact with people in the lobby. I am aware of two different tools that can do the job. I use keyexp. Magic uses Perfect Keyboard. You can be trained to use either. Both tools are widely used on Mystic Island.
  2. Greeting people who comes into the lobby.
  3. Informing people the format of the tournament and that the event is open seating.
  4. Informing people how musical chairs scoring works.
  5. Handling substitute players.
  6. Timing players who unexpectedly left the lobby.
  7. Thanking departing players for participating the tournament.
  8. How to make announcements to the entire island (like come to this tournament, who won, etc)
  9. How to award ribbons.
  10. How to award island ladder points.
  11. Other commands that TDs can use in a tournament room.

When you accomplish being able to do the above and if you are willing, you can learn how to do any or all of the tasks listed below. You will be given as much time as needed to accomplish what you would like to do.

  1. How to keep track and calculate everyone's musical chairs scores. And to determine who won. Spreadsheets are available to help you do the scoring.
  2. Being involved in TOC (Tourney of Champions).
  3. How to handle seating assignments in single elimination.
  4. Helping out in special events such as Snowpass or Halloween/Christmas bash

When you have mastered how to compute musical chairs scores, you will be given an opportunity to run your own weekly tournament slot. I have ideas what can be done using musical chairs format, but you are welcome to come up with your own format. Possible formats are listed below.

  1. Musical Chairs Euchre, partner or cut
  2. Musical Chairs Hearts, partner or cut
  3. Musical Chairs Spades, partner or cut
  4. Musical Chairs Pinochle
  5. Musical Chairs Parrot, partner or cut

Active TDs are expected to run one slot per week. Active TDs are encouraged, but not required to fill in for TDs who cannot make their regular slots. If you would like to own more than one slot per week, this can be arranged.

If you are still interested in becoming a tournament host, please e-mail Josh at MusicalChairs@manidae.org. I would be more than happy to make arrangements for you to host your own tournaments. Keep in mind that all tournament hosts are expected to comply with TD guidelines. Also, you must have played at Mystic Island for at least two months before you can host. And LdyIce makes the final decision as to who can become a host and who can't.
