Mystic Island Musical Chairs Tournament Rules

Here are the rules for playing at JoshB's Musical Chairs Euchre Tournament at Mystic Island.

The new rules have been put in place on Monday April 22, 2002.

  1. Open Seating

Please seat yourself at an existing table that has an available seat. If all existing tables are full (or have a seat reserved), then a new table may be opened.

It is recommended that players who have not played Musical Chairs before do not open new tables as table hosts and leave the hosting to those who have played before. This would give players who never played Musical Chairs before an opportunity to get the feel on how this works.

  2. Musical Chairs Euchre Format

The format is designed to be a quick, fun, easy to play event. It is designed to last no more than 90 minutes. All games will be played at that table between those players. Exactly three games will be played by each player that night. The players will be seated as follows (or a similar arrangement)

Do not leave the table until you have played all three games.

  3. Musical Chairs Scoring Scoring will be as follows: the winners of each game will be awarded 10 points for the win, plus the difference of that game. The player earns a zero for each game that is lost. For example:
    • Game 1: A&B-11 C&D-6 A&B would score 15 (10 + (11-6)) points for that game, C&D would get 0.
    • Game 2: A&C-12 B&D-3 A&C would score 19 (10 + (12-3)) points for that game, B&D would get 0.
    • Game 3: A&D-9 B&C-10 B&C would score 11 (10 + (10-9)) points for that game, A&D would get 0.
    • Totals:
      • Player A: 15 + 19 = 34
      • Player B: 15 + 11 = 26
      • Player C: 19 + 11 = 30
      • Player D: 0 (I'm sure player D will do much better the following week! Also this player qualifies for the "I Really Tried" category - see below.)

Note that in Musical Chairs Euchre, it is not considered offensive if a player decides to call a loner when that player's team has 8 or 9 points. Winning that extra two points counts!

  4. Ribbons and getting your names on Musical Chairs Web Site

Ribbons will be awarded to the players with the top two scores each week. If there is a tie, more ribbons will be awarded. Each ribbon will last 48 hours (or however long the ribbons are programmed to last). If the player already has a ribbon, then that player ribbons will be renewed - that is it will expire 48 hours after being renewed (like what happens when you renew a library book). The three highest scoring players will be mentioned on the main page for one week. The same three player will also be recorded on the Tournament Winners web page.

There is a Weekly Winners web page listing the person with the highest score for each week. The weekly high score page will also mention those who won all three games that week. There will also be an "I really tried" category which will go to the player who got the worst score (you must lose all 3 games to become a candidate for this category).

  5. Qualifying for Musical Genie Tournament of Champions

At least four players each week will be invited to play at the Musical Genie Tournament of Champions. The four players will not be determined until the whole event is over for the night. Each player who won all 3 games will be invited. If there are less than four players who won all 3 games, then the remaining high scoring players who won two games will be invited to the TOC. Here is the list of people who will be invited by the Musical Chairs family to the next Tourney of Champions.

So if you have won all three games or won two of the three games you must provide the tournament host your e-mail address so that you can be invited to the TOC if you have qualified. If you have qualified but did not provide your e-mail address, the next highest scoring player who provided an e-mail address will be invited instead.

As of January 2004, TOCs are currently scheduled to be held on first Monday of each month.

  6. Posting Table results

The table results are automatically posted to the lobby when either side reaches at least eight points. As long as the final score is posted to the lobby, there is no need to post the full result of the game. However, if the score does not appear in the lobby, it is the table host's responsibility to make sure that the the results of each game is posted in the lobby. Also if by any chance actual final score is different than what is posted in the lobby, be sure that the tournament host knows that the score you posted is correct. This may happen in case of a crash and the game cannot be resumed from the time of the crash. Also the table host must verify with the tournament host at the end of the third game to make sure tournament host has the scores from all three games.

  7. Miscellaneous

Standard Euchre rules apply. This tourney is supposed to be fun. People who find it necessary to cheat, lie, bend the rules, or be difficult are NOT fun and as such, they should find a different place to spend their Monday evenings. If a disagreement does arise, please make every effort to reach a quick and fair settlement between the partners at the table. If the situation is unresolvable, the Tourney Host can be called to the table to make a ruling. Please note: the Tourney Host and all of the Tourney Helpers are kind, gentle, caring individuals. All of us are running this event for FUN. Arguments are NOT fun. As such, the Tourney Host's rulings will be quick and FINAL. If you don't like the results, set up your own tourney!

Note that in Musical Chairs, it is not considered offensive if a player decides to call a loner when that player's team has 8 or 9 points. Winning that extra two points counts!

  8. Crashes

Please be patient for the player who crashed to return to the game. Normally the crashed player can return within five minutes. If host crashes, the host should return and make sure that the game is resumed from where everyone left off. If the crashed player cannot return within five minutes, then the game is completed with a sub.
